The Center for Environmental Oncology of UPCI gratefully acknowledges the unique work of these organizations:

"Prevention is possible. Learn how you can make a difference."
"In response to the public health crisis of breast cancer, the Breast Cancer Fund identifies—and advocates for elimination of—the environmental and other preventable causes of the disease. Founded in 1992, the Breast Cancer Fund works from the knowledge that breast cancer is not simply a personal tragedy, but a public health priority that demands action from all."

"Working together today for a better tomorrow"

"The mission of the Center for Minority Health (CMH) is to improve the health and wellbeing of racial and ethnic minority populations by eliminating health disparities as defined in Healthy People 2010. Through teaching, research and service, CMH engages the University of Pittsburgh Schools of Health Sciences in a collaborative learning process designed to enhance the cultural competence of academic scholars and students. CMH further engages the community as trusted partners and participants in public health research and translates scientific research findings into health promotion and disease prevention interventions at the local, regional, and national levels."

"Protecting the Balance Between Climate and Life on Earth…"

"The Climate Institute is the world’s first environmental non-profit organization founded primarily to address climate change. For the past twenty years, the Climate Institute has led international collaborative efforts to develop innovative solutions to many of the world's environmental challenges."

"Discover how we'll help you face the greatest health challenges, and create a healthier world."

"Founded in 1948 and fully accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health, [University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health] is world-renowned for contributions that have influenced public health practices and medical care for millions of people. GSPH is the only fully accredited school of public health in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, and is one of the top-ranked schools of public health in the United States. … GSPH is also the only school of public health in the nation with a chair in Minority Health.

"The School is considered a leader in the field of women's health research and is one of the original sites for the Women's Health Initiative, the largest research study in the world to focus exclusively on women's health. It is also the site of broad-based research programs to better understand and treat HIV infection—the Pitt Men's Study is part of the longest-running national study of the natural history of AIDS."

"Creating Healthy Environments for Children"

"Healthy Child Healthy World (formerly Children's Health Environmental Coalition) is dedicated to protecting the health and well being of children from harmful environmental exposures. We educate parents, support protective policies, and engage communities to make responsible decisions, simple everyday choices, and well-informed lifestyle improvements to create healthy environments where children and families can flourish.

"Healthy Child Healthy World exists because more than 125 million of America's children now face an historically unprecedented rise in chronic disease and illness such as cancer, autism, asthma, birth defects, ADD / ADHD, and learning and developmental disabilities. Credible scientific evidence increasingly points to environmental hazards and household chemicals as causing and contributing to many of these diseases.

"As a national leader for nearly two decades, Healthy Child Healthy World has become the nation's leading organization of its kind. We help millions of parents, educators, health professionals, and the general public take action to create healthy environments and embrace green, non-toxic steps."

"Innovations today that preserve tomorrow"

A multidisciplinary research group of the University of Pittsburgh School of Engineering "aimed at initiating and nurturing research and education in the research thrust areas of green construction and sustainable water use."

"Together … Making our Vision a Reality"

"[M]ore than 150 stakeholders representing the health care community, cancer research centers, academia, community organizations, advocacy groups, industry and cancer survivors [have] joined with the Pennsylvania Department of Health and the Pennsylvania Division of the American Cancer Society to form the Pennsylvania Cancer Control Consortium (PAC3). PAC3 has worked through a very deliberate process in an open dialogue among these stakeholders to assess the burden of cancer in Pennsylvania, identify issues that cut across all stages of cancer from its prevention to end-of-life, examine available resources and opportunities, and to lay out a plan that represents a starting point for our work together. The work of PAC3 members led to the creation of the Pennsylvania Comprehensive Cancer Control Plan."

"Working to Protect the Environment Since 1939"

"The Pennsylvania Resources Council, established in 1939, is one of the Commonwealth's oldest citizen action environmental organizations. Recognized as a state and national leader in waste reduction and recycling, the remainder of PRC's work focuses on litter and visual blight prevention, watershed awareness, and composting. The strength of PRC's programs is derived from its continuing efforts to bring people, businesses, and government together to prevent and solve environmental problems. PRC has offices in Pittsburgh at the CCI Center and in eastern Pennsylvania at the Environmental Living Demonstration Center in Ridley Creek State Park, Delaware County."

"The Pittsburgh Regional Center for Science Teachers (PRCST) professional development focus is on using the instructional strategy 'STS by Green Design' to enhance teachers' ability to address multiple standards in one teaching lesson/plan."

The Center---one of the University of Pittsburgh School of Education's educator services---also provides an array of courses and resources for science educators and business representatives interested in science education, and "works closely with NASA and facilitates training in conjunction with the NASA Educator Resource Center for PA located at the University of Pittsburgh."

"Our vision: a world without breast cancer."

"Komen for the Cure is the world’s largest grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activists fighting to save lives, empower people, ensure quality care for all and energize science to find the cures. Thanks to events like the Komen Race for the Cure, we have invested nearly $1 billion to fulfill our promise, becoming the largest source of nonprofit funds dedicated to the fight against breast cancer in the world."

"We believe that all people have the right to make informed choices and to have the opportunity to learn about both the benefits and the risks of the activities in which they are engaged."

"In our world, it is impossible to avoid all risks, and reassuringly, not every exposure to most risks will have a negative effect. Nevertheless, scientific studies have shown that, over time, the combined exposures to a number of factors discussed in this project may account for a considerable portion of the current high rate of breast cancer. We argue that, when possible, it is worthwhile to look for less harmful alternatives.

"Every individual has a right to a clean, life-sustaining environment. We hope to encourage you to become more knowledgeable of your surroundings, to be a conscious consumer, to be informed of the possible risks, and to make choices that make sense for you. We hope that reading, watching and listening to this CD will help you to think differently about your daily activities and to make decisions that can lead to greater health for you, your families and your communities, while also helping to protect the fragile environment in which we live."

"We Make it Easy to Get Outside!"

"Founded in June 2001, we believe that our region has not yet tapped its assets in outdoor recreation to contribute to a vibrant lifestyle and make this a region people want to call home.

"The tremendous diversity and richness of our recreational opportunities are obvious to those who hike, bike, climb and paddle in this region. Unfortunately, this awareness does not extend to those without a personal network of contacts.…

"As this region works hard to maintain and/or grow its population base, create a place where people want to live and continue to stimulate economic development, our many nearby outdoor attractions could and should provide a focal point of activities and pride for residents and visitors alike.…[Venture Outdoors] will increase awareness of, participation in and appreciation for our many regional outdoor amenities while creating a sense that ours is an active, vibrant and fun place to live, work and play."
